Friday, March 14, is Pi Day! Pi, symbolized by the Greek letter π, is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. That ratio's first three digits are 3.14, hence the celebration of Pi Day on March 14. From the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to modern‐day mathematicians, no other number has captured humankind’s fascination and attention quite like π - it continues infinitely without repeating digits and has been calculated, using supercomputers, to more than 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Because it represents so much mathematical fun, and because it is also the birthday of Albert Einstein - one of history’s most revolutionary physicists - Pi Day has become an international holiday, with special events held around the world.
According to University of Portland professor Aziz Inan, this year’s Pi Day will be extra special because the date - 03/14/25 - contains every digit between 0 and 5. There is also a second mathematically interesting thing about this Pi Day: if you take the sequence [0,1,2,3,4,5] and chop it in half, and combine the resulting sequences [0,1,2] and [3,4,5] by alternating every other digit, you get [031425], which is the date 03/14/25!*

¡El martes, 14 de marzo es el Día del Número Pi! El número Pi representado por la letra griega π, es la relación entre la circunferencia de un círculo y su diámetro. Los tres primeros dígitos de dicha relación son 3.14, de ahí la celebración del Día del número Pi el 14 de marzo. Desde los antiguos egipcios y griegos hasta los matemáticos modernos, ningún otro número ha captado la fascinación y la atención de la humanidad tanto como π: continúa infinitamente sin repetir dígitos y se ha calculado, utilizando supercomputadoras, hasta más de 1 billón de dígitos después del punto decimal. Debido a que representa tanta diversión matemática y porque también es el cumpleaños de Albert Einstein, uno de los físicos más revolucionarios de la historia, el Día del Número Pi se ha convertido en un día festivo internacional, con eventos especiales que se celebran en todo el mundo.
Según el profesor de University of Portland, Aziz Inan, el Día del Número Pi de este año será muy especial debido a que la fecha (14/03/25) contiene todos los dígitos entre 0 y 5.
