HSD Hosts State Chess Tournament
South Meadows Middle School had the honor of hosting the State Chess Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. The tournament, which is typically held in Portland, brought approximately 600 students, coaches, and families to Hillsboro on Saturday; and approximately 300 on Sunday.
Saturday was the team day. HSD had nine K-5th grade teams competing out of the 52 that qualified, and three 6th-8th grade teams competing out of the 23 that qualified. All K-5th grade teams won at least one round. Tamarack Elementary School’s team only lost to the state champions and tied for 3rd place. Orenco and Brookwood had a close battle in the final round, with Brookwood securing 2nd place after a tiebreaker against Edison School. South Meadows Middle School’s team tied for 3rd place.
